Water Lifecycle
Water management is a hot topic in the petroleum industry, impacting many operational
aspects from access and resource protection to production and treatment. This workshop will touch upon all aspects of the operation with special consideration to a holistic approach in
water management and conservation. The water lifecycle begins with source selection and
baseline characterization. Design related aspects such as groundwater protection through
drilling fluid selection, and casing and rig site operations are considered. Completion and
production operations contend with the challenges of increased volumes, treatment and
reuse technology selection challenges, and water quality issues. Overall, water management
in an operations lifecycle touches all aspects of the operations. Operators face the challenges
of managing socio-economic expectations and impacts in a way that
insures the long term sustainability of this essential resource.
The first day will focus on North America, while the second day will compare and contrast
North America’s water model as used in other parts of the globe such as Australasia and
Europe. Challenges such as their unique environments will be emphasized. Discussions on
technology transfer for water management in oil sands operations are incorporated within the second day as well.
